An interview with Gennaro Apicella, Concierge at the Belmond Hotel Caruso in Ravello and a member of the Golden Keys Association of Hotel Concierges in Campania.
What is the strangest request you have ever received from a guest?
One day, at midnight, I received an email by a guest checking in the day after who wanted to propose to his girlfriend. A request that included helicopter transportation from Naples airport to Ravello in the morning followed by a tour of the coastline by boat. For the evening, he wanted to propose on bended knee at the Hotel infinity pool, have dinner on our infinity dream platform with a serenade and fireworks to frame the ‘yes, I do’ moment and a room filled in with ‘blue-tiffany’ balloons.
How is the Coast during the summer?
I like to think about the Amalfi Coast in summer as the centre of the world seen through a vintage filter, like an old postcard. A corner of Paradise, a long and spectacular stretch of Mediterranean coastline, overwhelming for its richness. I think the Amalfi Coast is THE complete destination.
What about during the winter?
In winter time, when all the crowds have gone and the majority of the Hotels and Restaurant have closed off for the season, the Amalfi Coast goes back to its roots of being a community village where everybody knows everybody else. A place full of antique traditions and characterised by a simple way of living where life goes by slowly with not too many people around.
