An irresistibly playful drama in two acts by Jacopo Ferretti set to music by Gioacchino Rossini. The opera, which made its debut in 1817, originally received a rather cold reception. However, after its first few performances, it began to gain popularity, becoming even better loved, as the 19th century progressed, than the Barber of Seville, later also winning international acclaim.
